Another Bit on Acceptance

A few months ago, I presented the argument of tolerance vs. acceptance. There is plenty more to be said on the subject, though perhaps not by me.

I found this qoute in a book that I'm reading:

"Official acceptance is the one unmistakable symptom that salvation is beaten again, and is the one surest sign of fatal misunderstanding, and is the kiss of Judas." Agee, James and Evans, Walker. Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. 6th ed. Boston: First Mariner Books, 2001. p.12

The authors James Agee (writer/journalist) and Walker Evans (photographer) go down into the Deep South on an assignment to explore the daily lives of sharecroppers.

In the quote, Agee is prefacing the rest of the book by imploring for the reader not to see their work as art. Art requires an acceptance of things as they are, because it is simply art and often times the meaning escapes the viewer. He asks that you not accept it as is at the risk of losing a true understanding of the subject. In his words, it is "a fatal misunderstanding." Acceptance is a fatal misunderstanding when you are accepting something you know nothing of.
