L'Ennui

Seriously, this is ridiculous. I should not be exhausted from a three hour time change between the east and west coasts. However, I'm dead tired.

I'm sitting at my desk on my lunch break wishing this day would end. I don't want to be here. I don't want to be anywhere. I would say I want to sleep, except even being dead tired, I have had the hardest time falling asleep over the last month.

I blame it on Ennui. Wiki's description: "The original French word Ennui, means general lack of interest, boredom or depression. It may also refer to oppressive boredom. It refers to a state of being rather than a passing mood as is generally the case with 'boredom'."

I have a general lack of interest in my job. I am depressed from the feeling of being in a non-moving state; the lack of set plans for the future makes me feel like I'm not going anywhere.

Ennui with life as it is now. I need a change. Lately I lay awake thinking up ways I can change my current situation and I get frustrated, bored and depressed.

To focus on brighter things, here are some happier moments:

  • I was in Fresno. I miss Fresno.
  • I am back in DC. I miss Fresno and my family.
  • I have a new delegation coming in next week.
  • I was late this morning so the Examiner courier didn't hiss at me at the metro station since he was already gone. He's Hispanic so he says "essaminer" and therefore hisses incessantly as people walk by. It's worse than a snake and it creeps me out.
  • I have a newly married sister and a new brother in law. More family came to their wedding than I've seen in a long time. It was a beautiful wedding. I want to elope.
  • I'm babysitting four times this week for much-needed extra money (but another reason for lack of sleep)
  • I received a letter from Elder Bryan Wesley Carlson :)
  • I had breakfast with Dama.
  • I sang "Life is a Highway" with G while eating dinner.
  • I found the "Dark was the Night" album while perusing music at Barnes & Noble. I purchased it.
  • I brought a leftover wedding favor sugar cookie back to DC with me. I couldn't even wait a day to eat it and when I did, I savored every bite. Pure goodness.
  • Two of my best friends, both named Melanie, may be moving out to DC.
  • I saw the sun shining and felt the wind blowing (cold) on my face this morning.
  • I'm alive

Special Delivery from Mom

My mom sent me a package that contained this picture framed inside.

Our family friends had taken a picture like this--with everyone dressed in white like in the temple--and my mom wanted to do it too. We had all of our white clothes from when we were sealed a few years earlier. Since we don't take pictures in the temple, this picture represents that day.

I'm 17 in the photo and a senior in high school. My oldest brother was leaving a few days later to go up to BYU. I found out a few months later that I was to join him up at the Y the following year. The moment is a little dated, but it's a little bit of home away from home that now sits on my desk.

We be jammin' in the FD

This last Christmas I received one of the greatest gifts EVER. No, it was not peace on earth. No, it was not a husband. Which leaves only one option...cassette tapes!

After opening real presents with the extended family, my aunt and uncle plopped a huge non-Christmas gift bag in front of me and said here's your "almost Christmas" present. To my surprise (actually they foretold the gift would come) I found a plethora of old cassette tapes inside. I think I know what you're thinking...AWESOME!!! Right?!

Well, maybe you're thinking I'm weird. Maybe I am. But before you judge too quickly you should know that the Flying Dakota only has a cassette player. Therefore I have a great need for cassette tapes to increase my music choices. You might think it would be worth my while to get a new stereo installed...with a CD player. Or enter the 21st century and buy an ipod and then get a plug in for the stereo. Let me point out that both of those options require a significant amount of money that I can't quite justify spending yet. So until that day of big spending, I'm rockin' out to the few tapes I could bring out with me, including Billy Joel, the Eagles, Heart, Garth Brooks, Lionel Richie, Linda Ronstadt, Michael Jackson's "We are the World," LeAnn Rimes, as well as the Pretty Woman, Dirty Dancing, and Bodyguard soundtracks, and many other artists my aunt (and maybe my uncle?) enjoyed about 15 years ago. If you need help remembering the masterpieces that were produced by these artists' albums, then you should google them after chastising yourself for missing out or forgetting some of last century's greatest entertainment.

This "almost Christmas present" is going on the top ten list of Greatest Ever "Almost Christmas Presents."

Restaurant Week in DC

Twice a year close to 200 restaurants in the Washington, DC area offer special three course menus at fixed prices for lunch and dinner. Since it's 2010, this year's lunch is $20.10 and dinner is $35.10. People in DC rave about it because you essentially get to eat three course gourmet meals at a steal of a deal.

Today LG and I went to eat lunch at Bibiana. During Restaurant Week you have to consider that most restaurants participating will be packed and the restaurant tries to get you in and out as soon as possible. I'm sure they do this to get in more revenue as well as meet the high demand for tables. But sometimes it's still difficult to meet the demand. Our service at Bibiana was surprisingly long and we waited close to 20 minutes for our first course. The waiter noticed that we hadn't received our first course and asked if we were pressed for time. We really weren't because both of our bosses understood where we were, but we did tell him we were on our lunch break. He offered to bring our first and second course out at the same time and we agreed that would be best. We just wanted good food.

Then the maitre d' approached us and stated that he would be paying for one of our lunches since they had to serve both courses at the same time. We hadn't even complained about it! So we both got a Restaurant Week lunch for less than $20 (we still gave the waiter a good tip). And the food really was delicious. I'll definitely go back since now I know the excellent service they give too.

Shall We Dance?

I received an email this morning from my good friend LG. In it was an offer for 3 dance classes for only $19. With a deal like that, I'm sure you're wondering where and how you can get the same sweet deal. Well, I'll show you: http://deals.livingsocial.com/deals/320?ref=email-jp&rpi=29408

That's right: Burning Calories with Exotic Dancing, only $19!!! In case you're too cool to click on links, here's the advertising blurb: (I'll save your eyes from the pictures)

"Strike a pose, ladies! Who's ready to strip away some pounds??? Today's steamy deal gets you a 3-class bundle to The P Spot, D.C.'s premier Exoterobics studio, for a mere $19! That's 60% off the regular price! Practice your dips and inversions in PoleFit, total-body tone with Strip Aerobics (high-heeled shoes recommended!), and tighten up those hams with Chairwork, a lower-body burn modeled after -- you guessed it -- a good 'ole lap dance. Each 45-minute class is offered several times per week. You'll have 6 months to take 3 classes, but for those eager Elizabeth Berkley's among us, you can burnish your bod in just a few days. BTW: We hear Camelot's hiring..."

Yes, I will be taking the classes. I've kind of wanted to try this out for a while. We'll see how good the workout is. But anyway I'm taking advantage of just one of the many perks of living in DC. This is the sweet life for sure.

beck

P.S. More on dance lessons to come. I've been trying to get down to KanKouran Studios to take classes for a while now. I just decided that this needs to be a year for dancing. I've missed it.

A Special Day

I wasn't going to blog about this experience, but then I realized there were a few things that I wanted to share about it.

The day after Christmas I went to the Fresno Temple with members of my family and received my endowment. This is a sacred ordinance in the LDS Church and it is a tremendous blessing to God's children. (Read more about temple work here). I cannot share what exactly took place inside the temple for the endowment ceremony. However, I will try to express how I felt.

First of all, the timing feels so pertinent to the value of this experience. I know that this was the right time for me to complete this ordinance and it was incredible to me how things unfolded beforehand and it all fell into place. This ordinance most often takes place in preparation for marriage or a mission--for reasons that I won't get into here. However, there are times when single members like me also receive this ordinance. You prepare to receive it your entire life by keeping commandments and living the Gospel, but last year is when I started to prepare with an end goal in sight.

The timing looked kind of perfect for my family members to come out to DC in October and go through the temple with me here. To say I was excited was an understatement. It's not really something you announce so it took a lot of self control to contain my joy and not tell anyone and everyone about what I was going to do in the coming months. I was especially excited to go to the Washington, DC Temple. While I love the Fresno Temple and the special experience I had there when I was sealed to my family, I have truly come to love the Washington, DC Temple and was really looking forward to going through there.

When my lovely older sister started to seriously date a guy over the summer and there was talk of an upcoming wedding, it seemed the chances of my family flying across the U.S. to DC were lost. My sister became officially engaged in September and a date was set for January (which is now in just two weeks!). This not only meant that my family wouldn't be coming out to DC, but it also left a very narrow window for me to go to the temple with them since I would only be home for a few days over the Christmas holiday. And of course then I wanted to make sure to be endowed before the wedding so I could be present in the temple for the sealing.

Scheduling the temple session became very tricky, because of my family's travel arrangements and all that was going on around the holiday. Remember my sister's bridal shower? That was a big ordeal and one of two showers I attended/planned on the same day I went to the temple.

At one point, the anxiety from planning the shower and the nerves that had built up from the idea of doing this ordinance made me want to postpone the temple date to a less stressful time. Though if I postponed I would miss my sister's wedding probably by only a few weeks. But I was dying from the stress. I couldn't comprehend how it would be a peaceful and uplifting experience if it was squeezed to fit into an already impacted day. I expressed these concerns to my Dad over the phone. I was in a "woe is me, I'm a middle child and can't get what I need" state. Wow, just writing that makes me realize how ignorant I was. I told him I didn't want the stress to distract from the sacred experience. My Dad helped me realize something that I had forgotten about one reason why we have temples. Besides the ever important ordinance work, temples are a place where we can feel peace despite the chaos in the world around us. As the Lord's house, it will always be filled with His spirit. My dad told me that going to the temple that morning couldn't be a more perfect time, because of the peace it would bring me. I consented that he had the right and tried to focus on the blessings of that day. I also know that Satan tries very hard to keep us from doing important things. I'm sure he was doing all he could to discourage me.

So a few days later when I was unable to go to the LDS Distribution Center in DC to buy my temple clothes because of the big snow dump , it hardly phased me. I almost expected something like that to happen. But I was determined to get what I needed. By some miracle, my sister was driving down to Los Angeles that same morning and she was able to get temple clothes and garments for me.

So the morning finally arrived. My mom and I had arrived early and I entered the temple for the endowment session. Things went seamlessly. The Temple Matron, Sister Stoker, was a longtime friend of our family's and it was so special for her to be there with me. She is one reason why I'm so profoundly grateful that I went through in Fresno. She and her daughter were special role models to me when I was a young and impressionable girl. She and my mother were both a comfort and helped ease my nerves from not knowing exactly what to expect.

The endowment ceremony was a bit overwhelming, but as a whole it was quite remarkable in its simplicity. I was surprised at how natural it seemed. I felt the love of my Savior, Jesus Christ, more powerfully than any other time or place in my life. I also felt a defined sense of purpose and divine worth as a daughter of my Heavenly Father.

I was greeted by members of my family in the Celestial Room. I was reminded of the day my family was sealed almost 10 years ago in the Fresno Temple--all dressed in white in one of the sealing rooms there. The few of us who were there with me that day were all dressed in white again. The endowment ceremony is the same in every temple across the world, but I could not have completed it in a better time or place than that morning in Fresno with my family.

Last Saturday I was able to go through the Washington, DC Temple with a few friends before it closed for maintenance work. I didn't have to wait very long to fulfill my wish to visit the temple here and I look forward to going back there often while I'm in DC.

It Should Have Been Me!

I recently watched North and South for the first time and became slightly obsessed with Richard Armitage. I then proceeded to search for any thing on Netflix Instant Play in which he played a role. And I found...The Vicar of Dibley. He was in the 2006 Christmas special of the show. Since I watched this two-part series shortly after falling in love with Richard Armitage myself, I could totally relate to this video. I would recommend watching all of the series if you have access to Netflix Instant Play. I found myself rolling on the floor laughing.

Enjoy!
