My First Christmas Newsletter

Happy New Year from Washington, DC!

To My Friends,

I hope this letter finds you well and happy after the holiday season. I sent out some letters in the mail to those who are not as technologically savvy and decided it would be easier to send you emails. Ironically it took me a little longer to send out emails though it takes less time. Anyway, it seemed a good time to send a holiday greeting to those whom I care about. You have loved and supported me in my life and I want to share with you where your influence has led me. So here is my Christmas/barely New Year’s/almost Valentine’s Day newsletter from Washington.

The most influential event in my life this last year started back in February when I was accepted to BYU’s Washington Seminar program. The program consists of an internship in a DC office as well as classes with a BYU professor. I chose to intern at the Institute of International Education (or IIE, because DC is obsessed with acronyms). I flew out on August 30, and a few days later began my incredible, yet unpaid, internship in DC.

From September to December I worked at IIE on the International Visitor Leadership Program. Under the delegation of the State Department, we prepared three-week exchange programs for professional visitors from other countries. The visitors come to Washington, and then travel to several other cities in the U.S. to obtain a broad and deeper understanding of America as well as a larger working network for their field. The visitors are professionals ranging in fields anywhere from HIV/AIDS prevention to foreign policy and government. I have met some incredible people from all over the world.

I would like to share with you two lessons I learned from my internship. First, diplomacy is not limited to the State Department. IIE works closely with a large organization of volunteers from around the country. The volunteers are ordinary citizens who help facilitate our programs for the visitors. They are instrumental to the success of the programs. Secondly, I learned that I might like too many different subjects. My interests are strongest in international affairs, because I seem to be obsessed with foreigners. However, I love the arts. I cannot get enough of art, music, theater and dancing. I have spent many hours and probably too much money from a student budget at the Kennedy Center. My ideal job would yield diplomacy through cultural exchanges. And if I could throw in politics and business and sports, I might be content with my work.

My internship was my last semester as a BYU student. I am finally finished! I postponed my graduation so that I could participate in the Washington Seminar program. I will go back to Provo in April for commencement, but since I was hired on where I interned, I plan on staying out here in the DC area for at least the next year or two before moving on to graduate school. I hope my American Studies major and French minor will prove useful in whatever career I choose, though I am first planning on getting a master’s degree to strengthen my educational background.

I have always imagined that my career interests would take me all over the world. I have not been all over yet, but it is my goal. These yearnings to travel seem to take me further and further from my family and friends. I did not imagine how heartsick this could make me. Though I may not see you often, I am ever grateful for the lasting impression you have had on me. Have a wonderful New Year!

Love, Becky

Friends Forever!!!

Today I was able to reflect on the friendships in my life and the kind of friend I try to be. I wasn't thinking of any friendship in particular, though my friendship with Laura started the thought process. I met with the lovely Laura Grace today for lunch and then a jaunt to the American History Museum. It was a little LLHN fun in DC. I don't care how much time passes between seeing her, I will always love that girl. It's the kind of friendship where time and space may keep you apart temporarily, but when you're together again, you can pick up where you left off. I love that. There aren't too many people with whom you can have that sort of connection. Anne of Green Gables calls it kindred spirits I think. I call it real friendship. When I care for someone and have developed a deeper relationship with them, it doesn't matter how much time may pass between telephone calls or emails. If they called me after several years and needed a favor, I would gladly do it.

It's common for friends to drift apart. People move away and when you're living in completely different hemispheres, you simply don't communicate as often. I don't mind if people don't keep in touch every day or every week or even every month. I don't need the reassurance of a phone call or an email to know that they're my friend. I know that families are automatically that way. That's why it's okay to send out annual Christmas cards and have family reunions every few years. My friendships are like those guaranteed familial relationships. They have a life-long guarantee with no strings attached.

Now I'm learning how to do all this, so it looks retarded, but I thought I'd try to post some pictures of friends (some, not all)

Old Xanga entries #2

These are just so fun. I think I might just include them at the end of each of my new posts. I have two here that show a glimpse of how boy crazy I can be.

my calves are still burning from the hike on tuesday. i tried to get out of taking ballet class today, because of my burning calves, but my teacher wouldn't let me wimp out. :( it actually wasn't so bad and i'm glad that i endured the pain, because it was a good class for me.
highlight of my week: yesterday, my new laptop came!!! i'm typing on it right now! yeah!
highlight of the whole laptop delivery and setup: beautiful, tall, dark, handsome, singing, guy in my family group was over at our apartment for about two hours getting the internet to run. it was heaven in our little kitchen.
that's all the excitement up in "Mormonland." i once heard people refer to the byu, provo area as a bubble, and it is so true. you walk through the grocery store and they announce some good treat that would be perfect for family home evening--only mormons would know what that was and only a town heavily populated by mormons would be able to get away with that. my roomate went jogging at 10 pm by herself; that is just impossible in other cities, but in provo you're pretty safe.

yes. if i were to go jogging at 10 p.m. by MYSELF...i would get raped and pillaged. pirate style. so i don't do such things. i never walk anywhere alone, unless it is to a class in broad daylight. but really. C-R-E-E-P-Y. so negative on that. i'm glad you're enjoying your bubble. because really... it truly is. you should come to berkeley and see how insane it is.

Hey, I'm glad to hear you're having a good time Becky! I'd leave a longer comment, but it's 3:24 AM, and I think I need to sleep.

I'm so glad you're loving BYU!!! I love that it is so safe because Berkeley is what you would call not safe. At least I know I don't have to worry about you.

i am so excited!!!! my sister is flying into provo tomorrow for her friend's wedding! she's going to stay with me in my apartment and she's bringing a bunch of movies that i just can't live without. my dad might come up too. he really wants to see BYU play, i mean get killed by USC. just can't wait for all that to come down.
crazy coincidental occurrence today. i am on an intramural team--ULTIMATE FRISBEE. we're not that good, but we have fun. today we played a team from my brother's ward, and we won! (actually they forfeited because they did not have enough players) the crazy coincidence was not only that our first game was against my brother's ward, but that his amazingly hot roomate was playing. we played a practice game after their team forfeited and i could never block him while i was on defense because i was afraid to go near him. luckily we had already technically won the game. there were actually some other pretty good lookin guys playing too, but i already knew the hottest one. words of advice to any readers of the female gender, if your school has intramurals, get involved because you will meet so many beautiful boys, er men, er guys. or maybe there are only beautiful guys at BYU. that sounds good. we'll just say that. sorry. you guys are missing out. you should visit me and then you'll see.
just you wait, henry 'iggins. --my fair lady . don't worry, i'm studying too.

I have one thing to say: I am blessed!

I was trying to figure out how to come up with some money to put down a deposit on a new apartment. I think money is pretty tight for everyone right now. I didn't want to ask my parents, because I'm a grown up and I know they have their own money issues in the recession. So I've been praying for help. Perhaps it's not as effective as good old-fashioned work, but when you don't have a paying job, prayer is as good as it gets. A few days ago, out of the blue, I got an email from someone I did some work for a few months ago. So I guess I really did do the work, but the reward was a little late. I wasn't originally supposed to be paid for the job, but there was a chance that I might. Right when I really needed it and was praying pretty fervently, I got an email saying that there was a check ready for me. Hallelujah! I'm so blessed! I'm grateful for prayer, I'm grateful that there are good people who listen to the Spirit, and I'm grateful most of all that my Heavenly Father knows me and hears my prayers.

Now I really just need to find the new place to live.

Old Xanga entries

I had to check out my old xanga for kicks and giggles. I think it'll be fun and maybe a bit nostalgia-inducing to periodically post my old blogs. Here's the first one ever...just over four years ago.

I think Erin should work for xanga because it seems like half the people here were brought in by here. I know I was. Anyways, it's good to have a simple way to comminicate with you. Hopefully I'll be able to find more words to say in text than I seem to manage in person.

hey guys! it was so good to hear from all of you! the best part of this is not that i can keep in touch with you guys, but that it's free! hehe. the school has open access computer labs e v e r y w h e r e, so i've been getting on the internet for free. i should be getting my laptop next monday or tuesday. i just can't wait! i've really needed a computer up here to finalize my schedule. by tomorrow i should have 18 credits--i wish i could have more, but that's our limit up here. the university doesn't want anyone to overload, fail and drop out. you can get put on academic probation really easy. right now i'm takin psychology, french, book of mormon, family history, aerobic dance, modern dance, ballet, and basic vocal skills. tomorrow i'll start my international folk dance team classes (i auditioned yesterday) and i hope to get into the university chorale. i'm barely getting my feet wet, in regards to level of difficulty, but i don't know what i want to do exactly, so i'm trying lots of things and doing the things that i love. this saturday BYU plays the Fighting Irish from Notre Dame and i'm going! i have a sports pass to go to every single sports event on campus. i'm psyched! wow, this is long (cuz it's my first real entry--erin did my last one) i'll get more practice.

oh my goodness! i had no idea there would be so many hot guys up here! my ward has the best ones too. it must be the mountain air. speaking of mountains, tonight my roomates, my brother and i are going to hike up a mountain where there is a huge Y for bYu. it's something you have to do sometime before you graduate, kind of a lot like pilgrimage, except it is NOT part of the LDS faith. i'm enjoying the time i spend with my brother. i never really got a chance to do that before cuz he is so much older than i am. i see him all the time now. i like it. i've seen so many people from fresno/clovis. as far as i know, none of us are rooming together, because we all wanted to experience new things, meet new people, but we see each other all the time! it's not bad, it's just unexpected at a school of 20,000 people. i'll let y'all know how the hike goes. becky bee buzzin out.

I'm here...now what?

So this is my first official post on the blogspot. I used xanga ages ago and maybe someday will transfer my posts from there. For now, blogspot will be my blogger home.

Now the real reason for the post. I made it back to DC! I spent close to a month in Fresno after finishing my internship. My family was warm and loving--most of the time. I had all the comforts of a stocked fridge, a warm, soft bed, internet at my fingertips (the office becomes my bedroom when I'm home), and wonderful friends. I was beginning to doubt if DC was the right place for me at this time when there are so many good things for me in Fresno too.

I've been doing all the normal things to help make a decision, i.e. praying, pondering, pro and con lists, asking everyone I know for their opinion. It's frustrating after doing all that to still have no idea if what you are doing is right. I had no reason to go, but I had no reason not to be here, so...here I am! I'm jobless and living in Fairfax for the moment.

Fairfax is not the ideal place to live since I do not have a car. I have to take a bus just to get to the metro station, which is the last station on the line. I won't be here long--it's only temporary. I have to keep telling myself that so I don't go crazy. Well, I'm already crazy, but I have to at least feign sanity.

For some reason a scene from the movie Elf just popped into my mind. Since I live my life through movies and music, I'll share the scene. Buddy the Elf is in Gimble's store and sings--to the chagrin of the manager--so Jovie can see that she can sing anywhere. "I'm singing/I'm in a store/and I'm siiiiiingiiiiing!/I'm in a store/and I'm siiiiiingiiiiing!" I'm not sure why I thought of that. I sing when I'm happy and I suppose I can sing anywhere too. Wow, that's corny.
