Good'uns

It's been a good week. Here are some highlights.

My sis came into town and we went down to the Outer Banks in North Carolina for a weekend on the beach. It was lovely.

Back in DC my sis and I went to the Newseum. I love that place. It's worth every penny. My sis met Mohamed. This was unexpected, but it turned out to be okay. I'm glad that someone in my family has met him now. She made it a lot easier to be around him. We also ate sushi together--real Carlson family bonding time. Then my sister left me, as I knew she would.

Katy, one of my bestest friends from college got engaged. She's getting married in August and I'm so excited to go out to California for the wedding.

I tutored a student in French.

The Supreme Court of California ruled that Prop 8 stands. The marriages that had already taken place last year will remain. People are upset about it. Some people (like me) are pleased that the court didn't overturn the will of the people.

My dad texted me to tell me about the ruling. I hadn't heard about it yet. In that moment I was relieved, of course. However, I did not feel the same as when I found out the election results back in November. Back in November I remember sitting at work and not being able to do anything. I was listening to Coldplay's "Life in Technicolor." Honestly, it was one of the rare moments where I felt a rush of emotions--mostly joy. I had put in so many hours working towards that final outcome. Back in November the riots and protests started immediately after the elections. I learned then that winning a battle doesn't win the war and the struggle would just get deeper. So I think this time I was more guarded in feelings of joy, because I know this is only one more moment in the continuous struggle. The song still came to mind. It seems to be a running melody in my mind--my current theme song.

I watched Prison Break and hung with the Greginator and Dama. I also packed up to move to a new apartment on Monday.

Tonight I went to a goodbye party for my hometeacher.

I just found your blog and am loving every sentence of it! We need to get together sometime soon. There is a kabob place right by my apartment that you would love. Send me an e-mail sometime and we'll catch up (rachel.rasband@gmail.com).
